NZQA Level 3 and 4

Admission Requirements

New Zealand citizens and migrants with New Zealand Permanent Residency are eligible to study at the Welding Academy. You must have an acceptable level of English, meet any specific programme entry requirements, and follow AIS policies including attendance.

Entry Requirements:

  • Domestic Students must be 16 years of age or over before the start the course.
  • Domestic students must have NCEA level 1
  • Applicants must be fit and able to carry out the physical requirements of the welding industry.
  • Applicants should have a desire to pathway onto further study or start a career.
  • Students must have successfully completed the Level 3 course before starting the Level 4 course.

Apply yourself

  • You can apply yourself using the online application form on this website. Go to the Domestic Student section click ‘Apply now’.
  • We need to see your Passport or Birth Certificate to confirm your I.D. You can send a copy with your application to enrol, however we will need to see the original before you commence the course.

Fees Free tertiary study in 2023

If you’re looking to study with us for the first time, you may be eligible for fees free support.

Are you eligible for the fees free study?

  • To receive fees free support, you’ll need to meet the relevant eligibility criteria and be enrolled in an eligible course.
  • To check your eligibility for Provider Based Study, you’ll need to go to the Government Fees Free website [ https://www.feesfree.govt.nz/ ] and enter your National Student Number (NSN). The Fees Free website will also have instructions on what to do if you do not know or have an NSN.
  • Once you’ve checked that you’re eligible, you can now browse our career and study options.

 

Eligibility results

  • Once you’ve entered your NSN, you’ll receive one of the following results:
    • Yes – you’re eligible for fees free
    • No – you’re not eligible for fees free
    • Maybe – not sure if your eligible for fees free
    • If you get a no as an eligibility status, you can apply for a Student Loan or Allowance. For more information on Student Loans and Allowances visit the StudyLink website.

 

Those who get a maybe eligibility status, but meet the eligibility criteria, need to complete and submit a statutory declaration for Provider Based Study to be eligible for fees free. Instructions for completing the statutory declaration form are on the Fees Free website [ https://www.feesfree.govt.nz/ ]. We encourage you to do this as soon as possible, so there are no disruptions to the start of your studies.

What does fees free cover?

Fees Free covers:

  • Tuition fees
  • Compulsory course costs, and
  • Compulsory student services fees

Fees Free does not cover other optional and occasional fees.

What course or programmes are eligible for fees free?

  • Only our full-time Level 3 and Level 4 Certificate in Welding and Fabrication Programmes are available under fees free.

Frequently asked questions

I Don’t know NSN number?

  • If you have an NSN number but can’t remember what it is, you can contact the New Zealand Qualifications Agency (NZQA) on 0800 697 296 (between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday) or by email through the NZQA website.

 

Why did I receive an invoice? I thought it was fees free.

  • We are required to send you an invoice by email, so you can keep it with your records

 

Can I change my mind?

  • No problem, you have the opportunity to withdraw from your chosen programme as outlined in our terms and conditions. If you do not take up your place it is likely that you will be eligible to begin your first year with zero fees at a future time.

We recommend students apply as soon as they can, so fees and payments can be sorted before course commences.

How StudyLink can help you

StudyLink provides student loans and allowances.

  • Student Loans
    • These can help with paying for your course fees (the compulsory fees charged by your education provider), study materials (e.g. travel) and living costs (e.g. rent and childcare), but you will have to pay it back.
  • Student Allowance
    • This is a weekly payment that can help with your living expenses (e.g. rent and childcare) while you are studying, and if you are eligible you do not have to pay the money back.
